I did not want to do it. I held on as long as I could. It grew twice as fast as it did last year. In the end, while I am weak for shaving my playoff beard, I am stronger for it, for I will be smarter next year and not attempt to go all the way.
I know what you're all saying: "If we lose, it's on you Vancan!" and "What a chump?!" But I ask you, would you have the courage to admit to EVERYONE that you gave in and let it go. On top of that, you guys out there, and I hope just guys, know how it feels when it just gets too long and it's incredibly irritable. I am weak for giving in yes, but I think many will understand my pain!
Fear not my fellow Canucks fans, I am still as fanatical about this team as ever and I even went to the lengths of having an exorcism of sorts done so as not to have any repercussions for the Canucks due to my now lack of beard. If you've been watching any of my videos on whotheman.com, you will know that I love debating about my Canucks. Since I started on WTM, I have befriended an Oilers fan. His name is Dean Wendland, but you can call him Rodney Dean or Don Cherry V2! I figured that if a non Canucks fan who's cheering for the Canucks in these playoffs can bless me on behalf of the hockey gods, I would be free of blame for anything that may befall our Canucks this spring, knock on wood! So this is what he had to say:
Dear Josh (Vancan19) Hall,
Being a die hard Oiler fan, I still wish a Canadian team(other than Calgary) would challenge for the Stanley Cup, so I will cheer for the Canucks this year. The growing of the playoff beard is a long standing tradition in playoff hockey, and I understand that you could only last 6 games before needing to rid yourself of your facial hair. Although I find it hard to believe that you can actually grow facial hair, you are not bound by the hockey gods to stick to it. Only REAL hockey players playing in the playoffs are the ones bound by the rule to keep the beard going, so you are hearby exorcised and excused of your weakness.
Signed,
Sir Rodney of Dean,
Hockey Pro, Whotheman.com
I thereby sent my gratitude to him and wished the hockey gods do something good for his team. It's only fair for such a kind gesture right?
I posted a status on facebook this morning, saying to everyone, I need my beard exorcised, and I got some ribbing, as expected, but I was a man about it! Only a real hockey fan could say that. So on this day, a day after the Canucks finished off the LA Kings to move on to the the 2nd round, I am clean shaven, and shall remain relatively so. I am free to cheer on my team as I have always done and not worry about the hockey gods striking me down. Call me crazy, but I think this is the year the Canucks go all the way. On that note...GO CANUCKS GO!
If you would like to see or learn more about Mr. Rodney Dean, check out his website http://members.shaw.ca/dnoman/. He does many impressions, the best of which, In my opinion, is Don Cherry. Second to none. You can also check us both out on www.whotheman.com where we are both currently engaged in a Stanley Cup Video Debate Tournament. You can also follow us both on twitter. Our usernames are @vancan19 and @rodneydean44! Thanks for reading!
